video reflection week 6

1. I was extremely impressed by Ms. Caufal's teaching. First of all, I liked the fact that she valued what her ELL students brought in. She even made the effort of telling the parents that the language they learn at home is helpful, even if it is not English, since they are building language skills which they can then transfer to the English language. I also liked her idea of using the terms "super heroes", "super readers", and "super powers" when teaching her class. This made reading a fun, exciting activity, and also made them feel really proud of their status as "super heroes" and their ability to use "super powers". I noticed that she made a point of complimenting her students by saying things like "That's being a really good partner!" Compliments encourage students to continue working hard toward success. I liked the fact that she differentiated student grouping throughout the lesson. They  started out learning together as a class, then went on to work independently, and afterwards with a partner. This kept the lesson active and prevented students from becoming bored or  not stimulated. She also made sure to keep the lesson fun by playing a game and giving each child a witch pointer. It is extremely important, especially in younger grades, to keep the lessons fun and exciting in order to enable students to develop a love of reading and learning.

2. Pop-it game, group lesson - how to use "picture power" to figure out what a word says, shared reading - practice using "picture power", independent reading, partner reading.

3.While students were working independently and with partners, MS. Caufal walked around the classroom, observing her students and asking them questions in order to assess their levels, skills,, and mastery of the lesson.

  1. complimenting students is crucial and can have lasting effects. When students are made aware that their teacher likes their work or behavior, they are encouraged to do it again. I guess you would say this is a classic example of reinforcement:)
